Asters are invaluable in the perennial garden, helping to provide fantastic color in early fall when many summer perennials are done blooming for the season. Aster is very durable and tough and is long-lived. Mounds of color begin in September with clusters of daisy-like purple and pink flowers lasting well into fall. Asters should be planted in moist well drained soil in full sun, but they will tolerate light shading.Pinching back your Asters should be done prior to July 4th to encourage better branching and more blooms. Asters can be propagated by dividing the existing clumps in the spring every 2-3 seasons. These are perfect for the front of borders or summer gardens, rock gardens, or containers. They are resistant to deer and attract butterflies while naturalizing freely if left to reseed. They make nice cut flowers too.
