Ruby Slippers® is a beloved oakleaf hydrangea that is prized for both its large 9" flower cones emerging white and gradually turning to deep ruby red and its lovely ornate, deeply lobed foliage that resembles the foliage of oak trees. Best looking foliage of any hydrangea! Ruby Slippers® is extremely versatile as it is more compact than others. It grows 3.5' tall and 4' wide and in autumn its foliage will begin to take on maroon and mahogany coloration for a brilliant display, allowing the garden show to continue much longer than other hydrangea.

General Product information

This oakleaf variety produces blooms on old wood, so it is best to prune this type shortly after blooming and before August to be safe. If these stems creating the buds for next season are pruned and removed in early fall, then there is a high likelihood that you will have significantly fewer flowers if any the next summer. Please remember that pruning is completely different than simply removing spent blooms or dead wood. You can always simply remove any dead wood that exists in early spring once the plant has emerged and began to produce green foliage. This will help clean the plant up a bit from the winter season. One major advantage of oakleaf varieties compared to its cousins is that these types can thrive in much dryer and sunnier locations. Oakleafs will tolerate sandy soil conditions where other hydrangea can struggle.
